Brief Biography:
Prof. Akpanglo-Nartey is currently a Vice-President (Institutional Effectiveness and Ag. Provost) at Regent University College of Science and Technology and the immediate past Rector of the Zenith University College, both in Accra. Prior to these positions, he served as the first Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, from December 2003 to 2006. In that capacity, he acted for a number of short periods as Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Prof. Akpanglo-Nartey also served as Director of the Quality Assurance Unit as well as Dean of the Faculty of Languages Education in the same University. He served as the Co-ordinator of the External Funds Office (EFO) and Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics, which he himself had established at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). He is currently attempting detailed acoustic-auditory description of the speech sounds of the top twenty Ghanaian languages, with emphasis on GaDangme and the Ghanaian variety of English. He is also conducting research in bilingual acquisition of English and GaDangme, while re-examining the current orthographic representation of GaDangme as well as the language policy of the Republic of Ghana.
Prof. Akpanglo-Nartey has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in general linguistics as well as acoustic and articulatory phonetics while carrying out research at a number of institutions around the world - including:
- National University of Singapore, where he ran the Phonetics Laboratory and conducted a spectrographic analysis of Singaporean English vowels;
- King Saud University, Abha, Saudi Arabia, where he established and directed a computer assisted language laboratory (CALL), and conducted research on the speech of normal versus abnormal Saudi Arabic speakers;
- IBM Research Headquarters, New York, USA, where he built a set of Diphones (or Transemes) for use in the IBM text-to-speech Synthesizer;
- University of Ilorin, Nigeria, where he established and directed the Department's Phonetics Laboratory; and
- University of California at Los Angeles, where he researched Parameters needed to characterize the Fricative sounds of Natural Languages. He also assembled an inventory of the fricatives, affricates, plosives, and nasal consonants of 317 natural languages.
Prof. Akpanglo-Nartey is a traditional ruler under the stool name Nεnε Abanam-Akpanglo II. He is also a Member of the GaDangme Council.
Publications:
Prof. Akpanglo-Nartey has published a number of scholarly articles and books in the areas of Phonetics, Phonology and General Linguistics. He has also published novels, short stories and poems.
