The Regent–Ghana MSc Statistics Programme Kicks Off
The Regent-Ghana premier MSc Statistics programme started on Friday July 16, 2010. 47 students participated in the first orientation and welcome ceremony. In attendance were Professor Nsowah-Nuamah, the chairman of the University Council, former Government Deputy Statistician and a lecturer at the institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER, Univ. of Ghana, Legon), Professor Ouseph Thattil (Head of Department Statistics and Mathematics, and the programme director) and Dr Charles Owiredu (Provost and Vice President Academic Affairs). Others in attendance were Kofi Ashiboe Mensah, Senior Assistant Registrar, Nancy Ansah, Public Relations and Aaron Agyei (lecturer).
In his welcome address Dr. Charles Owiredu the Provost of Regent University College of Science and Technology, gave the students’ a background to the Msc Statistics Programme. He also stated that preparation for the programme started about four years ago and that everything was now ready for the programme to take off. He mentioned that the programme had a lot of prospects for the students and admonished them to take their studies seriously. He also encouraged them to make good use of the resources available to them and to network as well.
He further reiterated that Ghana needed very good statisticians to help government and other stakeholders in its developmental progress for the nation. He mentioned that this programme will produce a new breed of statisticians who will turn the fortunes of Ghana around. Graduates will not only get certificate but will have infused in them knowledge so that they can become agents of transformation. Prof. Nsowah-Nuamah on his part recounted how the idea for the programme was conceived, the thorough accreditation process it under went and the prospects of the programme.
Prof. Thattil, the programme director talked about the philosophy and the uniqueness of the programme. He mentioned that this programme was going to leverage on modern statistical tools and current software programmes to derive the maximum benefit of contemporary statistical studies.
